What is the difference between home care and home health care?

Home Care typically refers to non-medical in-home care. Non-medical home care focuses on assisting seniors with daily living activities that they need to engage in life and remain safe and independent in their own homes. Usually, the goal is to keep the senior in her own home for as long as possible to avoid institutional placement. Family members or professional caregivers who do not have a medical license generally can perform these tasks.

The following care tasks are a few examples of non-medical in-home care services:

Bathing
Transferring from a wheelchair to a commode or a bed
Toileting and incontinence care
Medication Reminders
Companionship
Meal Preparation
Light Housekeeping
Transportation and errand running

Home health care refers to care provided in the home by a licensed medical professional, such as a nurse or physical therapist. Generally, home health professionals are only authorized to perform the tasks prescribed by the senior's physician and are usually intermittent and short-term.

Here are a few types of medical care that fall under the home health category:

Registered Nurse
LPN
Occupational Therapy
Physical Therapy
Wound Care
Pain Management
IV Therapy/Injections

As our population ages, more and more seniors require assistance with non-medical activities of daily living to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible. 1st Premier Home Care is available to assist you with all of your non-medical home care needs. Call us today at 505-271-2120 to schedule a no obligation, no cost, in-home consultation.

Are home care services covered by my insurance or Medicare?

Medicare does not cover non-medical home care services. Medicare may, however, cover short-term medical home health care services, such as an RN or a Physical Therapist. Please speak to your physician if you would like to discuss options for medical home health care.

Some insurance companies will pay for non-medical home care services, specifically; most long-term care insurance plans should provide some payment towards a caregiver. 1st Premier Home Care works with most long-term care insurance companies and we would be happy to assist you with accessing your benefits for non-medical home care services.

We also work with the Veterans Aid and Attendance benefit, which is a benefit paid in addition to the monthly pension paid to Veterans and surviving spouses who require the assistance of a caregiver to remain independent in their own homes.

Finally, for those who do not have a benefit that will pay for your caregiver services, we accept private payments for our services. We offer a very competitive rate and bill weekly for services rendered. Please call our office at 505-271-2120 for more information.
